This 10 day old baby boy from Buang, Pandan, Anteque, Philippines was brought to me last August 18 during the screening of cleft patients at Culasi. Immediately upon arrival at Manila this weekend, I presented this case to the pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons and pediatric neurologists of UP-PGH, St. Luke’s and Lungsod ng Kabataan.
Questions: Are we dealing with a newborn who has no brain (anencephaly)? Or is his brain the one that bulges out of his forehead (nasoethmoidal myelomeningocele)? What are his chances? What will be the quality of his life? Shall we be aggressive in our management considering the meager resources?
At this point, an MRI needs to be done.
